ŠKODA posts growth in November

  • Worldwide deliveries rise 3.8 per cent to almost 78,000 in November 2012
  • ŠKODA grows in Western Europe in November despite the market trend
  • Advances in China and Russia

Mladá Boleslav, December 13th, 2012 – ŠKODA AUTO raised its deliveries by 3.8 per cent year on year in November. Deliveries to customers rose to 77,900 (full year: 75,000). From January through November, sales advance by 6.9 per cent to about 873,000 (January through November 2011: 816,800).

“Once again, we increased our deliveries even though markets were difficult,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “Our growth in Western Europe in November is especially welcome given that we grew against the market trend. The situation on the markets continues to be demanding. However, ŠKODA remains on the offensive with new models,” says Eichhorn.

In Western Europe in November, ŠKODA again posted growth, raising deliveries by 4.3 per cent to 28,200 (November 2011: 27,000) in an otherwise strongly shrinking overall market. ŠKODA has significantly outperformed the market throughout the year so far as deliveries reached 331,900 from January through November 2012 (January through November 2011: 336,800). Market share rose above 3 per cent for the first time during the first eleven months compared with 2.8 per cent a year ago. The brand posted strong gains in its strongest Western European markets in November, these being Great Britain (plus 30.2 per cent) and Germany (plus 15.2 per cent).

In Eastern Europe ŠKODA achieved a plus of 7.9 per cent in November for a total of 12,400 vehicles (November 2011: 11,500). The brand rose by 26.7 per cent to 123,500 units from January through November (January through November 2011: 97.400). This growth was almost three times as strong as the overall market, which was 9.4 per cent. At the end of November, ŠKODA’s market share was close to 4.1 per cent against 3.5 per cent from January through November 2011.

Once again, Russia contributed strongly to the brand’s growth as deliveries were up 12.5 per cent to more than 9,000 (November 2011: 8,000), making this November ŠKODA’s second-best in Russia after June 2012. In the first eleven months, ŠKODA’s deliveries in Russia were up 36.6 per cent to almost 89,100 and market share grew to 3.6 per cent (January through November 2011: 2.9 per cent). Series production of the ŠKODA Yeti in Russia began in early December.

In Central Europe, ŠKODA delivered 10,200 vehicles to customers in November (November 2011: 10,600). The brand’s sales in the first eleven months rose 1.3 per cent to 114,100 units compared to 112,600 one year ago. Market share in the area rose to 18.8 per cent from January through November (January through November 2011: 18.5 per cent). Deliveries in the Czech Republic, the brand’s home market rose 3.3 per cent to 54,700 as at the end of November (January through November 2011: 52,900).

ŠKODA also continued its growth in China: the brand’s posting and advance of 4.9 per cent to 21,100 deliveries in November (November 2011: 20,200). As at the end of November, ŠKODA has sold 225,900 cars in China or 7.1 per cent more than a year ago when the comparable figure was 211,000.

In India, ŠKODA deliveries numbered 2,000 in November (November 2011: 2,300). From January through November, ŠKODA grew by 24.4 per cent to 32,100 deliveries to customers on the subcontinent (January through November 2011: 25.800).

Five stars for safety for the ŠKODA Rapid

  • Euro NCAP recognises high safety level for ŠKODA Rapid
  • ŠKODA Rapid receives good marks for passive safety in Euro NCAP crash test
  • Brilliant occupant protection for children and adults
  • Family car with expressive design, excellent price-value ratio and efficient engines impresses with safety equipment
  • ŠKODA Rapid honoured with coveted awards only weeks after launch

ŠKODA’s new compact hatch earned good marks in the Euro NCAP crash test for its high level of safety. Euro NCAP recognised the ŠKODA Rapid’s excellent test results in the areas of occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and safety assistance systems.

“The ŠKODA Rapid is one of the safest cars in its segment,” says Frank Welsch, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development. “These Euro NCAP results are confirmation from an independent party. Our compact hatch is an ideal family car offering lots of space for five occupants and their baggage. It is functional, high quality and conforms to top-level safety standards,” says Welsch.

The ŠKODA Rapid impresses with an expressive design, an outstanding price-value ratio and efficient engines. It sets new standards in the A-segment as a roomy, elegant and at the same time affordable family car. This compact hatch offers its customers clever solutions, excellent economy and comprehensive safety equipment. The ŠKODA Rapid complements ŠKODA’s model line-up between the smaller ŠKODA Fabia and the larger ŠKODA Octavia.

The Euro NCAP results confirm these facts, with occupant protection for adults and children rated as 5 stars across the board. “ŠKODA makes cars for people. Technology is not an end in itself, but serves to increase safety and comfort for driver and passengers. We are happy that Euro NCAP paid special attention to this aspect,” says Welsch.

Initial awards for the ŠKODA Rapid reflect the car’s good qualities. More than 110,000 readers of German specialist magazine AUTO ZEITUNG made ŠKODA’s new compact hatch the winner in the “most affordable car” category. This earned the Rapid the coveted “Auto Trophy 2012.” At the awards ceremony for AUTO BILD’s “Golden steering wheel,” the jury voted the Rapid the best car in the middle/upper class.

Euro NCAP awarded the ŠKODA Rapid top marks for its comprehensive occupant protection for adults, achieving 94%, with full marks for front-seat passengers both in frontal and side impact tests. Crash dummies also remained almost unscathed in the demanding pole test.

The ŠKODA Rapid scored very well in child safety, achieving maximum points in the dynamic tests for protection of three-year-old children. Neither front nor side crashes harmed test dummies fastened in their rear-mounted Isofix child seats from ŠKODA Original Accessories. Overall, the Rapid achieved an 80% score in the area of child safety.

Euro NCAP awarded favourable marks to pedestrian protection for the ŠKODA Rapid, with the bumper’s crash behaviour scoring 100%. The bumper is designed to reduce impact on a pedestrian’s legs in a collision as far as possible. The bonnet scored especially high in areas liable to receive an impact from a child’s head.

The ŠKODA Rapid’s five-star score was also down to its safety assistance systems, with special mention going to the ESC electronic stability control (standard in EU countries) and belt fastening reminders for driver and front-seat passenger.

The Euro NCAP top score is independent confirmation of the high safety level in the ŠKODA Rapid. In the area of passive safety, a comprehensive safety package protects occupants in an accident. This includes front, side and head airbags, height-adjustable three-point safety belts with belt tighteners and headrests. The car’s strong structure makes for excellent deformation behaviour in a collision.

ESC including ABS is standard on the ŠKODA Rapid in EU countries. A long wheelbase and precise suspension make up the basis for stable driving dynamics. Functions such as a tyre pressure monitor, fog lamps with a so-called “corner function” and Hill-Hold Control for starting up steep slopes enhance the ŠKODA Rapid’s excellent safety level.

Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) is an independent consortium of European transport ministries, automobile clubs, insurers and consumer protection bodies. The organisation carries out crash tests involving new automobile types and assesses their safety.
